It's Almost Time For National Night Out In Meridian

This last weekend, we celebrated the 250th anniversary of the United States of America as a nation, community, and as neighbors. I truly appreciated seeing the various gatherings around my subdivision as people came together.

The 4th is a great opportunity to spend time together with friends, family and neighbors. However, there is another evening that stands out as a simple but powerful reminder of what makes Meridian and its neighborhoods the best place to live, work, and raise a family – National Night Out.

National Night Out is an annual event that brings people together and plays an important role in building and strengthening community relationships. Throughout Meridian, neighbors will gather the evening of August 4, 2026, to host block parties, barbecues, and gatherings.  These events provide opportunities for residents to meet their neighbors, welcome visits from the Meridian Police and Fire personnel, and connect with their elected officials.

Last year, there were 22 National Night Out events across the city – each one building community and trust one slice of pizza and conversation at a time resulting in a stronger, safer neighborhood. This is why I encourage every neighborhood in Meridian to consider participating in this year’s National Night Out.

If you are interested in hosting an event in your neighborhood, our Crime Prevention Unit is here to help support your event with resources and ideas. An event doesn’t have to be complicated. Some of the most impactful events are the simplest, with neighbors gathering in a shared green space, with adults connecting and children playing together. You can check out the National Night Out planning guide on our website to help you get started. But time is running out. If you want your event to include visits from our police and fire personnel or an elected official, the registration deadline is July 10, 2026.

I’ve had the opportunity to attend many National Night Out events over the years and have seen firsthand how these evenings can spark lasting connections. I’ve seen neighbors meet for the first time, children interact with firefighters and police officers in a positive way, and communities come together in a way that reflects the very best of Meridian.

I hope you will join us this year by getting involved and helping host an event in your neighborhood. Together, we can continue to make Meridian a safe place to live and a connected, vibrant community.
